2001 Nissan Maxima filter replacement

I am getting ready to change the tranny filter on my maxima and after some research I have found out that its covered under a valve body, is this true should I still replace it, is it neccessary

It is more of a screen than a filter.That trans has a drain plug, then you refill it.Use only Nissan trans fluid for your trans those transmissions are time bombs to begin with, the incorrect fluid will not do them any good. Be prepared for the price though it is considerably more than regular ATF
