Air conditioner system in most cars have a protective switches that prevents the compressor from running when the refrigerant pressure is too low or too high. This is to protect the compressor from damage. If you loss some or all the freon, the A/C ssystem will most likely stop working until you correct the problem:

1. Correct the leaking problem
2. Perform a A/C system vacuum
3. Recharge the A/C refrigerant to the correct quantity.

In the US (your temp description of 18 indicate that perhaps you are not from this country), this kind of work typically should be done by a certifiied A/C mechanic. Discharging freon into the atmosphere willfully is illegal.

Thanks for the tips I'm from canada we use degrees c so it should turn down lower. Also I wasn't going to willfully discharge the freon into the atmosphere thats why I had it unplugged to begin with. I wrote for a helpful tip not an assumption I plugged it back in so I could take it to have it serviced. Thanks

Pie, my last sentence was not intended to accuse you of doing so. I was just stating the law in the US about discharging freon during repair, not directed at you personally.
