1996 Nissan Maxima I-beam, struts, shocks

My 1996 maxima "shimmys" when I go over a bump in the road. The dealership told me I need $5000.00 worth of repairs! They told me that since my car spent most of its life in the North, the I-beam has rusted, needs new struts in front, new shocks in back and a host of other things. I want to fix the vehicle but obviously not that kind of money.
Can I purchase an "I-beam"? And as far as struts and shocks, do I purchase complete assemblies? I went to an online parts warehouse and they have the struts and shocks I need. I have a pretty good independant mechanic but wanted some additional advice. Thanks!

Yes you can buy I-beams.

You can usually get suspension/steering parts from local autoparts stores or online. The I-beam would probably have to be purchased from Nissan or local junkyard.

Struts (for some cars) can be purchased as replacement cartridges or some suppliers provide "quick struts" which is entire strut assy, including new spring.

I would sit down with mechanic, list all parts you need from the Nissan diagnosis, and shop around for pricing.
Look at local sources, internet parts suppliers and local junkyards.
Have mechanic give you a labor charge, total up cost of parts/labor and see what you come up with.
