My speedometer suddenly stopped moving. It's down at zero - does not move at all The engine RPM and odometer are OK. The car runs fine.
Is this something I can fix easily? How much could it cost if I took it in? I
s there a potential problem with the car that I should be concerned with - will the transmission suddenly stop shifting?
Please let me know. Thanks

Sounds like the vehicle speed sensor when whack! inspect and test-VSS is used by the computer to command and control the transmission as per governor pressures.

Thank you for your response. Will there be a serious problem if I do not have the speed sensor fixed?

Dunno the serious effects however if it malfunction it affects how the transmission shifts-best bet just get it fix when you can afford it.

Since the odometer and engine RPM gauges are working OK, does this mean that the transmission will not be affected?

As long as the transmission is shifting okay-you're good to go the VSS only tells the computer how fast you're running and the computer uses it to monitor the governor pressure to provide upshift/downshift/overdrive/lock-up-could be bad connection or the gear in it has sheared off/out of alignment.

Thanks for the email. I did check the fuses, but will re-check.
Since the tachometer and odometer are OK, and the care runs fine, could it be a loose conection somwehere that's causing the speedometer problem?

Check if the speedometer is cable driven could be behind the speedometer head or down at the transmission
