Transmission problem
1987 Nissan Maxima Two Wheel Drive Manual 300+ miles

I am looking at the car described above and am told that it wants to pop out of 5th gear - will stay if you hold the stick in. Mentioned a possible synchro replacement. Is this possible? Or is it an entire trans?

HI there,

The syncro is only part of the the gear selector system, the syncro ring is a brass cone that acts as a brake to slow the gear so the selector hub will engage (synchronize speed) there are wire clips and locating dogs that lock in the hub and with the detent on the selector, this holds the gear in mesh, now there are a number of things that can go wrong but regardless the transmission will have to be removed & inspected first, but this should not require a new trans but just an o/haul.
