1987 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive

If I suspect my timing chain is broken: Is there a possibility that I won't need a valve job? Couldn't I replace the timing chain and get the car running ?

yes theres a chance nothing is damaged and if timing chain was indeed the problem then yes it should start back up fine.

Your car does NOT have a timing CHAIN....it has a timing belt....and YES if if breaks...you are in trouble, because your car has the 3.0 v6 interference engine...interference means there is no control whatsoever over how high up those valves will go, or how high those pistons will go...when mine broke...it chopped the spark plugs up...and scored the head real bad...had to rebuild the engine...sorry...that is the drawback of the 3.0 v6 interference engine...seek someone who can chainge out the belt assembly with a timing CHAIN assembly, and then she's a real tough cookie...
