2006 Nissan Frontier belt noise, maybe something else?

My serpentine belt was making noise, especially in the rain, so I sprayed some Belt Conditioner on it and it got worse. The air conditioner compressor is not spinning all the time, it starts to spin, but then stops (I don't know if this is normal or not). The belt looks like it is in good shape with no cracks or anything like that. Why would the problem get worse with the Belt Conditioner and where could the squeaking/squealing be coming from?

Hi rumpoe, Thank you for the donation. You have a slipping belt and the belt conditioner or water getting to it would worsen the situation. The squealing noise is coming from it. Either the drive belt is worn or the autotensioner is weak. Just to be sure it is not the AC compressor, turh AC off and note if the squealing noise stops. The diagram shows the drive belt routings and components.

Is it safe to drive still? Will there be any problems with my truck if I continue to drive? About how much would it cost to fix? Thank you for your help.

Driving is not a problem but it would be best to get it checked and rectified asap as it could affect the charging system and if it is a bad AC compressor bearing, it could seize and casue the belt to give way.

The cost would depend on what is the cause, belt, tensioner or pulley.
