I don't really know much about cars, and I have a couple of questions. I recently purchased a 97 Nissan Altima GXE with 113,000 miles. I bought it from a dealer, and so they supposedly inspected it, fixed up whatever needed to be fixed, and delivered it to me today. As soon as I restarted the car, the engine light came on. It had been on when I first test drove the car a couple weeks ago. The car runs fine, there are no problems, but when I opened up the hood, the engine bloc was burning hot. There was no smoke or anything like that, and the temperature gauge inside the car indicated normal temperature. They drove the car about 20 miles from the dealership to where I live, and then I drove it for an additional 15 miles.

Is it normal for the engine to be as hot as it was to the touch? And what could possibly have triggered the engine light to come back on? They told me they replaced the head gasket, and changed the oxygen sensor, and that the light had been off when they came to deliver it. They also said that the mechanic will call me tomorrow, and that I may have to bring it back to the dealer.

I plan on using this car to go out of state a couple times a month, and I don't want it breaking down on me on the highway. Is it possible that the engine light is broken?

The engine is hot to the touch.

The check engine light means there is a problem that is affecting the emissions. Unless it is a flashing check engine light, it isn't a reason to panic. But it should get checked out reasonably soon. Especially since it should be taken care of by the selling dealer.
