I recently got a quote from a local auto shop which charges $590 for parts ( $120 x 2 for the rear shock absorbers and $150 x 2 for the front struts and $30 x 2 for the strut mounting kit) and $310 for labor. I looked online at pep boys and it looks like I'm getting ripped badly on the part ($40 for shocks and $70 for struts). What do you believe is a reasonable price for parts and labor and how long should it take to install.

if you feel you could get cheaper parts somewhere else than you should just to buy the parts and then take it to the shop and ask that they use your parts that you already purchased. quote is below for all that you mentioned, parts and labor..

Typically, there's at least a 50% mark-up on parts at repair shops because they have to warranty the parts as well and for overhead.

If you find a mechanic that does side work at his/her home (like mine), you can buy the parts (or use the mechanic's discount) and have them replace them for less. Or you can replace them yourself. They do take a while to replace - I don't think their labor charge is unreasonable.

Or, you can try buying the parts and then seeing if a repair shop will install them - but you will probably have to sign a waiver of warranty. Most repair shops won't do it in my area... I wish you luck!
