Steering problem
2003 Nissan Altima Front Wheel Drive Automatic 70,000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
This was the response by Service Writer for a problem that I'm having. It was posted Mar 3 for an "02 Altima.

"May not be a problem in the power steering at all. That is the strut mounts may be seizing causing the hard steer. IF you jack it up, disconnect the outer tie rod ends and push/pull the wheels you can feel excessive resistance or not. OF course do this first before disconnecting to see how tight it is then."

My question is can I do something to ease the tightness or must it be serviced at a garage??

If it needs the strut mounts, the struts will have to be disassembled, this requires a special compressor and is still dangerous. Yes, i would suggest that you have a shop do it

if your steering is TIGHT, as in you need 2 hands all the time to steer and the wheel doesn't return to center unless you pull it back, you may want to check the Steering U-Joint, which has to be replaced, as it cannot be re-lubricated.
