I have a 2000 nissian altima. Its in pretty good running condition exept I recently had the thermostat replaced. Lately (everyday) when I drive the temp needle reaches the H on the guage. The check engine light does not come on. The needle goes back down to regular temp if I am on the freeway, but when I am on surface streets it returns to the H mark. When I turn the car off it still sounds like it is on. Any idea what is causing this?!?!? Please help!!! I don't want to be ruining my car!!

yes, check and or replace the engine coolant temp sensor but before doing so, verify that the fan works
