Quest shakes at high speeds

Typically that is a sign of a wheel balance. I would have them rechecked and also shecked for any abnormality while they are on the balancer-ie wobble rim bend etc.
I'm surprised they could machine the rotors and not have them go under spec.

I have a 2002 Nissan Quest with 115,000 miles one it.

The car shakes at around 60-80 mph then seems to go away.

I have a got a 4 wheel balance and tire rotation, recently.

The vibration didn't seen to start until after the brakes were replaced and the rotors were turned by nissan.

Should I just replace the rotors? What else could cause it?

I took the quest back to the place where I had the tires the balanced at and had them redo like you said. They also checked the rims and gave it a front end alighnment. Now it stills shakes at high speeds?

They also said everything looks good as far as the tie rods, cb boots, ect.

If everything was good, maybe the rotors are a problem. I can't say I have seen it except for when you brake and get the vibration, but at a cruise it is typically wheel balance. I would have to think everything is tight in the front end since it was aligned. A driveshaft is also a possiblity.

I don't like the fact the dealer turned the rotors because you almost never stay in spec.

I had someone else drive the van and asked for his opinion.

He had me turn the wheel while he felt the wheel and he felt a "pop", then I felt the wheel while he turned and I felt a pop. He said the "pop" comes from the tie-rods and that was causing the problem.

What do you think?

It's possible, pretty rare from my experience, but then I haven't seen an abundance of quests.

Well I tried changed my tie rods last night, and got the car realighned again......same shaking.

What do you suggest next?

What goes through my mind is that the problem started when the brakes were done. My mechanical logic says that if there was a problem with that you would feel it when your braking, not just at high speed crusing. My curiosity and paranoid side says that maybe there is a relationship. I know this isn't an answer, but needed to throw it out there anyways.

Is that "pop" still there?

I need to think a bit on this.

At what point were the tires last rotated? same time as the brakes maybe?


I think what I would do it jack up the front end and block it. Start the truck and put it into drive and watch the rotation of the wheels for an abnormality. What I think you may find is a tire hop or wobble. Somthing that shows that is isn't running true. IF you do find that on of them have a slight abnormality, rotate it to the rear and bring a rear one forward and drive it. Maybe while it's up, you'll hear somthing or possibly get a clue as to what's going on, Maybe an axle shaft is bad?

Your right, sometimes is best start from the begining.


Things that have done, since shaking.

1) Replaced motor mount

2) Brakes pads replaced machined rotors from nissan

3) Retreaded and retighted the motor mounts.

4) 4 Wheel Balance, Front end alighnment, rotate tires

5) had them rebalance and recheck for a bent rim

6) replaced tie rods

6) another alignment

I didn't think about an alignment on the motor mount, when they replaced the motor mount earlier they could of throw it or the transmisson out of alignment? It could be just the motor or transmisson shaking.

Also the cat still pulls to the right even after the alignment?

But,I took your advice and looked at it. It might be me but it looked like when the left tire was straight the right looked a wee bit going to the right.

And the poping not there. But I could bearly tell anyway.

I'm thinking of taking it to nissan and asking them to to recheck ALL of the alignments motor mounts, wheels, everything.

Wouldn't a axle shaft show up at low speeds, also?

PS the tires are Goodyear Regatta 2, about a year old.

As far as the alignment goes, it has nothing to do with vibrations or noise. It has nothing to do with the balance of the motor or trans. All it is for is for the tires to wear evenly, have the steering wheel straight and not have a pull (drift maybe on some streets).

What you needed to look for is abnormalites of the tire/wheel spinning, not the position they are setting in.

Axle shaft can surface at various points, depending on how bad the joint is.

FREAKING GOODYEAR TIRES.

I HAD goodyear tires on the van, that where less than 6 months old, that looked new. It had a lot of thread left on them.

I took it to a an out of town dealership and asked them, and they said that the tires that Goodyear makes don't work on the Nissan Quest and Mercury Villagers.

(sigh)

While I can't say I heard of something like that regarding brand, it doesn't surprize me that the problem is in the tires. I really don't see the relationship of brand to vibration.
