Engine Cooling problem

my nissan 240sx 1991, goes half way on the temperture gage , some time a little more high , the water on the reserve bottlle is boiling at times , the waterpump is farelly new and there is no thermostat , i thought that was the problem , is it normal that the water be boiling ?
