high pitch noise

For about two months now our car has been making a loud high pitched noise, like a whining noise. I can hear it if I go outside to start the car to warm it up from inside the house (if nothing is on inside). It does not matter if the AC is on or off, or if the air or heat is on either. It does not matter if I speed up or slow or if I am stopped. I took it to get an oil change about three months ago and they said that I had a small transmission leak, but it is nothing to worry about. Also, our check engine light came on, and we took it to O'Riley to see what the code is and they said it is the O2 sensors. What is this annoying sound? I do not want to drive it because I am scared it is something major. I have a video of the noise and I can email it.

Will probably be a bearing in the alternator or one of the other acc, remove drive belt and spin each pulley to see if there is any wear or noise.

Hi,
Did you find out what was the problem on your car? I am experiencing the same issue right now. It is making this annoying whistling noise and it sounds like it is coming from the transmission. Any information I would be very grateful for. Thank you in advance.

No I have not yet. I will do this on this upcoming weekend. I have taken the alternator to have it tested and I have had taken the starter also and the test showed they all works fine. I took my car to a mechanic shop and they pin pointed the problem to the transmission because the high pitch noise is coming from inside the transmission but he was not 100% because he has never heard this high pitched sound before. I would hate to mess around with the transmission so I will try removing drive belt and test this out. Thanks

I solved my loud high pitched sound. My problem was I had a bad breather box or what other mechanic call a oil trap I believe. it sits on top of the engine block and it is very easy to remove and exchange. The part it self cost me about $230.00 but that stopped the high pitch sound on my car.

I just had my 150,000 service and new brakes put on five days ago. Yesterday I had a long drive and my XC90 started making the exact same noise. And today the check engine light came on. Is it safe to drive? The repair shop I use is about thirty miles away and I cannot get there for a couple more days.
Thanks for any help.
