My radio is driving me crazy

I put in a Pioneer radio in my Monte Carlo. My stock radio didn't have great reception, but I can barely get anything out of my new one. I can get one main station and that isn't constant. I went to a car audio place and they told me that I couldn't put a different radio in from the stock. That doesn't make any sense. Any ideas what I can look at to get more stations?
