my car sometimes won't shift

car will not shift sometimes i will be driving along and have to slow down then when i start out the car won't shift the rpm's rev up then if i stop turn the car off and sit for a few mn restart the car it will be fine sometimes for the rest of the day sometimes till i slow down again
