My car check engine light just came on and now when I press the gas it takes a little while for it to speed up

it eventually speeds up after me pressing the gas after a while but it takes a little while for the car to do so ? what is wrong with the car and about how long do you think i have to fix the issue before something serious happens to the car and what is the result of me not fixing the issue like what could possibly happen to my car.
