aftermarket stereo turns on but no sound

The amp needs a signal from the radio or it will not turn on causing the no sound issue or there is a fuse blown for the amp.

That blue wire is the switched power turn on signal for a power antenna and/or amp. The amp in the vehicle needs a turn-on signal and it gets it on that last wire in the black plug. Those are the two that have to be connected.

I have taken out the old stock radio to replace it with a JVC radio model number KD - g400. to do the swap I had to buy the JVC radio harness and the harness to switch from stock radio to aftermarket radio for the truck itself, after everything is hooked up properly I cannot get sound out of my speakers but everything else turns on. the only way I have sound as if I hardwire from the JVC harness directly to my speakers. what would be going wrong for that to happen?

I have a similar problem in my 2004 Grand Cherokee. The factory radio works fine...I have sound. I put in an aftermarket Boss radio so I can have a Bluetooth connection and hands free operation. I don't think I have an amp...could be wrong. The wires in the aftermarket plug are aligned up with the plug that comes with the radio. I am not using the power antenna as I don't have a power antenna. The aftermarket plug that connects to the plug coming off the car doesn't have any amp wires, so I am assuming that means I don't have an amp. So the radio powers up...if I tune to a station, I think the light bars are indicative of sound being generated...not sure since I don't have sound LOL. I am at a loss. There aren't any fuses for the speakers or anything like that and, like I said before, the factory radio produces sound. This isn't the first time I have installed an aftermarket head unit and every other time it seemed to go pretty smooth. Do I have to hook up the power antenna wire to something to make this work? I am completely perplexed as to why this isn't working. Electrically speak...this vehicle is the most frustrating I have ever dealt with. Whomever decided to place the junction bloc under the dash the way they did needs to be beaten. That is like the worse design ever.

Look under the passenger seat to see if your vehicle uses an amp. By 2004 radio amps, and most computers on all brands of cars no longer turn on simply by turning on the ignition switch. The original radio generates a digital "turn-on" signal that is broadcast over the data buss. The amp turns on when it sees that signal.

I suspect there is something available through places like Crutchfield or Best Buy, but it would be easier to eliminate the amplifier. There are jumper plugs available for that, or you can cut and splice the wires.

I had to hook up the antenna power line to the amplifier and then it worked like a charm! I love this site :)


There was a second connector that was connected to the factory radio that I suspect covers the CD changer and the DVD. The wiring harness didn't have anything to connect that in, nor did the radio. Any ideas on how to connect this in so I can get sound from the DVD player?

You need a radio with inputs for accessories. That is built into the original radio. I'd ask at Best Buy what they do in cases like this.
