i pushed the peddle to the floor, my car then made a sickly noise like the rpm's revved real high but the car did not go any faster and now it will not start

I was driving down the freeway going about 68 mph and for some stupid reason i pushed the peddle to the floor, my car then made a sickly noise like the rpm's revved real high but sickly the car did not go any faster. i think i heard like a pop not loud but not sure if it was even my car. anyway i took the exit right after to get on another freeway but i had to slow down around a corner and when i accelerated the car made that loud sickly noise and would not go any faster then five to ten miles an hour. i coasted down hill to the exit where it died. it started up again but when i pushed the gas it died. i towed it to my house it started one more time and died. now it wont start at all. it turns over but no start. i changed the fuel filter, no change. any suggestions. I do not want to take to a shop?
