transmission only run on second gear and reverse only

If it only has reverse and second gear, check the fluid level and condition, you want a clean fluid that smalls and feels like oil, if it's dark or black and smells terrible it's time for a rebuild. It could be time even if the fluid is clean, the seller may have tried a fluid flush or similar and thrown in the towel before selling it.

Probably taking it to a trans shop to have them run some tests would be the best starting point.

hi. thanks for ur reply, anyway since i was an idiot i bought a used unit with warranty but it still the same, put it to 'D' it will launch at 2nd gear and stay there unless i shift it manually frm 1st to 2nd but then no 3rd gear and no kick down still, does it means my mpv is on limp mode? but there is no engine check light come out..worse the place im living dont have the obd1 adaptor socket...i dare not to drive the mpv as the revving is too high at such slow speed...

Without a proper scan tool that can talk to the transmission control module you are sort of stuck. If both transmissions act the same way it almost has to be in the electronics and the testing of those requires a scan tool to read the signals and test the controller. You might want to check the connections and wiring and test the transmission range selector using the charts below. The first shows the connector pin view looking at the end on the selector, the other chart tells you which ones connect in which position. For that test you only need a continuity tester to be sure the switch conducts properly.

Hi guys....well problem solve..its actually the ecu for the gearbox located behind the foot brake...replace it and all ok..bah....I wonder tis so called gearbox specialist fail to check...send to a wireman and he show me the thing and ask me to replace it or rebuilt it...well found a 2nd ones so down it go..now smooth...

Good job with the repair. Thanks for posting what you found. The electronics used with modern transmissions causes as more issues than the actual trans itself.
