Welcome to 2CarPros.

This can be the result of several things, so the first thing I need you to do is check for diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a link that explains how it is done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/ford-lincoln-mercury-obd1-1995-and-earlier-diagnostic-trouble-code-definition-and-retrieval

See picture 1 for DLC location. Also, here are the specifics regarding checking on this vehicle.

The self-test output and self-test input connectors are both used while performing the electronic engine control Quick Test diagnostic procedure with either a Super Star II tester or analog voltmeter. When the self-test input connector is jumped to ground, a signal is sent to the electronic control assembly activating the ECA self-test mode. The self-test output connector is used for retrieving output signals from the ECA which appear as numbered codes on the Super Star ll tester or needle sweeps on the analog voltmeter. Codes retrieved from ECA memory represent a malfunction within the EEC system, Fig. 12.

Do this and let me know the results.

Take care,
