Buzzing sound when braking at very low speed?

Hi,

It sounds like the ABS is actuating. Are you certain it doesn't have it? Based on my findings, most did. Also, when you say buzzing, does it seem like an electrical buzz or something different? Is it loud enough to record and upload for me to hear? Also, check in your owner's manual and see if there is a place for an ABS fuse. If so, check your vehicle. If it does have one, remove it and see if the problem stops. Note: Removing the fuse will prevent the system from working.

Also, does the brake pedal feel normal and not harder to press?

It does sound electrical not a metal-to-metal scrubbing like a brake issue. When I say it doesn’t have ABS, I mean I took the delay out. I don’t see that it has a fuse. The issue is intermittent. I can’t make it happen. My mechanic looked and said the brake system looked and functioned great. He even drove and couldn’t make it happen.

Hi,

If you have a relay, there has to be a power supply. This specific model isn't offered in the US, so I can't be certain if I give you information for the Montero it will be correct. However, I believe they are the same vehicle.

If you can, let me know if this is a 2wd or 4wd vehicle and I can scan through the wiring schematics to see what I can find for the Montero.

Mine is the 3.5 4WD Montero sport. It was sold in the Us for a few years and I think still sold overseas as the PAJERO. I recently changed the timing belt and it was the same procedure as the Montero with the 3.5 and 3.8

Hi,

From what I'm seeing, it has ABS/Traction control. I attached the wiring schematic below. I need you to remove fuse 7 from the fuse box inside the vehicle.

Pic 3 shows the location of the fuse. Note that this fuse will turn off several different components. See pic 4. This is only a test to see if the noise stops.

I can do this, but the issue only happens once in a few days of driving. Will it be ok to drive with that fuse out ?

I also noticed with the abs relay pulled that when I hook up my code reader that it is still giving me speed info on the wheels. I would assume that comes through the ABS ?

Hi Barry, I was wondering if you could upload a short video of the noise so we can hear it? Also, I have seen scalloped tire treads cause this kind of noise issue. Can you upload an image of the front tires so I can see or just rotate the tires front to rear?

It’s not something that happens every time we drive. It’s not a tire or wheel issue. Even though I pulled the ABS relay it sounds like it is kicking in. That’s exactly what it sounds like.

Barry,

If you remove the ABS fuse, you will still have brakes. The only thing that changes is if ABS is needed, it won't work, but you will still have normal traditional type braking.

Hi,

I do hear something right at the end. I'm not certain that it's relevant, but there was a recall on the Montero. Read through pic 1 below and let me know if that is where you are hearing the noise. Also, and again this may be different because it's for a Montero, check the color of the nut used at the top of the accumulator (see pic 2). Once the recall was completed on a Montero, it was indicated by the nut being pink in color.

My Montero Sport is different than the one in your last e mail. Here is a picture looking down on the master cylinder and the accumulator on the firewall. What is the electrical wire that runs to a clamp that runs to the master cylinder. The end of this clamp was slightly unplugged so Inplugged it up and it hasn’t made the noise for two days.

What is this wire ?

This is a tough one to answer. I checked the Montero schematics, and those wire colors are between the ABS relay and the combination meter. See pic below. If it wasn't fully connected, it may have been causing the abs to actuate when it wasn't needed. Actually, the more I think about it, that makes a lot of sense. The signal was getting interrupted and likely actuated the ABS.

Please remember I am looking at Montero schematics. Wire colors could be different. I don't see anything that is solid yellow. By chance, does it have a tracer color on the wire as well?

It happened again this morning. . I’ve noticed that it only happens when it has sat overnight and only happens for the first 10-15 miles you drive and brake. Could the accumulator. be leaking down overnight and then building up as I drive ? If I drive twice in the same day it does not happen on the second trip.

Yep, you found it, I would replace the ABS unit for a used one you can find on ebay. Looks like JACOBANDNICKOLAS was correct.
