I have a problem with the automatic transmission on my 1999 Montero Sport It has the 3.0L V6 with 156,000 miles. When you come to a stop it will make some strange sounds and then kill the engine. If you put the transmission in neutral when you stop the engine will idle just fine. The transmission runs fine in all other driving conditions. I’ve changed the filter and fluid but the problem still exists. My suspicion is that the torque converter clutch is not disengaging and thus it drags the engine to a stall when you stop. The problem is they don’t publish a manual for this car except for the multi-million dollar shop manual sold by the dealer. The transmission is an electronic version (INVECS-II 4A/T) and there are several electric solenoids inside and outside the case. I need to know if one of them is the culprit and which one.
