Help on Engine Vibration

I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4-cylinder 2.0L DOHC 73,000miles.

I had my car in the shop for a new water pump and timing belt. When i got my car back it has a really hard vibration when i am just idling, and when i accelerate it has a little vibration. I told the mechanic and he said there isn't anything wrong. I have driven this car for a year, it never did this, there is deffently something wrong. I then noticed that my gas mileage was really bad.

So, I was wondering if this could be from a poor Spark Plug or did the mechanic mess up my timing when he replaced the timing belt?

The big question is why was the belt done? From a maintenance procedure or because of a no start situation that the belt had failed?

This motor is an interference motor. If the motor goes out of time engine damage can occur.

The belt was done for maintenance reasons. it called for a belt replacement at 65k miles. there wasn't anything wrong, just didn't want to be driving down the road and it fail.

One scenario that MAY have occured is, when doing the timing belt, they may have not set it correctly. Meaning a great potential for engine damage that you were trying to avoid in the first place. This needs to be addressed before further damage occurs from not burning fuel adequetly. Such as fuel in the oil and damaged converters.

Another scenario is a damaged ignition wire or similiar disconnected and not reconnected from doing the work. How old are the ignition wires?

A third scenario, is an unrelated cause.


That leaves you with , taking it back to the same shop and have them diagnose it, or going to a different shop and having it diagnosed.

While I give a shop the benfit of the doubt in these cases, This shop failed the test. You have a problem that wasn't there. This isn't a normal idle. "There isn't anything wrong" is the wrong answer.

i am not exactly sure how old the wires are.

I was thinking that the timing wasn't set correctly. I will be taking it to the garage to have ti fixed, i don't know weather to take it back to the same place or not.

What do you think?

I'm inclined to think the valves may now be bent. Only because it wasn't there before and the is telling you that is normal. But it needs to be uncovered.

if you think it is the valves, how much do you think it would run me? it is a 16 valve.

If it turns out to be the valves, it is because the timing belt job was screwed up.

You need to get a dianosis of the problem at a different shop, before more time goes by. Do you need help in finding a shop?
