I Have a 1999 Galant with a 4 cyl. The AC, crank, pwr str belt came off on start up, it did not break. I replaced the belt anyway and a few days later it came off again. This happened a few times before I had someone else start the car while I watched the belts and pullies. To my surprise I noticed the crank pully move inward towards the engine about an inch or so then return to it's normal position. The crank bolt does not appear broken and the pully does not come off. I have done major engine work in my time but am mostly a GM guy. I can't say I've seen this before - am I in deep here? I want to trade this car but I need to fix this before I even try a trade, any ideas???

Even GM's have thrust bearings! If the harmonic balance is moving that much it's either the rubber part of the damper, or the thrust bearing...main bearing!
