hi i am trying to find the fault with a mitsubishi carisma its just been mot and serviced but since i got it back when i accelarate to 40 mph fast the engine cuts out and the engine man light comes on when its left a couple of mins it will restart hope somebody can help thanks

There is no sure way of determining such intermittent faults so I can only give some suggestions and you have to figure it out or provide us with more info.

When engine cuts off, you able to restart after a few mins, were you able to crank? Did the CEL show prior to engine cutting off?

You would need to confirm if it was fuel, electrical or ignition problem when it cuts off. Check for sparks at spark plugs, fuel at fuel rail.

What was the fuel tank level? 1/2 or less?

Does it happen at exactly 40 mph or sometimes higher? What if you don't speed more than 40 mph? Does it happen? Before hitting 40 mph was there any symptoms before the engine cuts off? If you decelerate just before it cuts, would it happen?
