I believe this could be the alternator.

While I'm driving the check engine light comes on and then I lose all power. I am able to restart it. I was able to get it home but it started doing it more frequently.

i had the same problem. i replaced my alternator and it seemed to work. but it ended up just being my attachments to my battery were lose and old and eroded. so i replaced those and it only cost like $4. to replace the alternator myself only cost $200. which is a hell of a lot cheaper than bringing it to a shop.
