I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage that I keep getting check engine light. My neighbor who is a mechanic scanned the computer module and stated it was a bad egr valve.
I changed the egr valve and the light went off temporarily, as 3 weeks later it came back on. I drove the car for almost a year with the light on, but would take the egr valve off every couple of months and clean.
That lasted until the car went from avg 27 mpg to about 17 mpg when I figured it was time to get another new (re-manufactured) egr valve.
Again, the check engine light went off. But this time, the light only stayed off for 3 days.
My question is: what do I need to do to keep the egr valve clean to begin with?
Would a valve job help or replacing the valve stem seals? Do they replace the valve stems seals when a valve job is done? Any other suggestions? Thank you!
