Engine Cooling problem

Hello, i am considering purchasing a 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero, the current owner says it loses alot of water from the radiator during short trips like taking the kids to school,shopping,ect, but not as much on longer ones, he says he has been told it just needs a clean but i am concerned it is an indication of a larger,more expensive problem.Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thankyou.
