2002 Mitsubishi Galant Thermostat

I have determined that my thermostat on my galant is on its way out. When idling after driving a few miles, my AC cuts off and my engine starts to overheat. I simply cut off the AC and everything goes back to normal pretty quickly. The part is only a few bucks, so I really don't want to pay $50 in labor fees. I have never changed a thermostat before and I'm having some problems finding directions on doing so. Any advice? I'd rather not pay through the nose on a repair manual if this is a generalized fix. Thanks.

Hi mdodson,

Did you check the coolant level in the radiator?

Are both the fans working when AC is on?

Does the overheating over prolonged highway driving?

When temp reading goes up, were the fans woking full time?

I would not be too sure about the thermostat, it could be a false rerading due to bad grounds.

To replace the thermostat you need to remove the housing connected to the radiator hose. It has a bleeder nut on top for you to bleed air out of the system when topping up the coolant.
