2001 Mitsubishi Galant white smoke and car cutting out whil

my car has white smoke coming from the tailpipe and when i leave it idling for a while it will cut off/wondering if this was the fuel filter causing it to cut out/don't know about the white smoke/just changed the oil and air filter
