2001 Mitsubishi Galant replaced trany with a differant year

Hi sincityman,

When the TCM senses anything wrong it would turn to limp home mode whereby it would only operate in 3rd speed.

If the gear ratios are different, shifting over all the sensors and solenoids would not work because when the trans is operating, the TCM gets different values from what it has been programmed to understand.

If all the ratios are the same you can try shifting the solenoids and sensors.

2001 mitz my transmisstion went out i got another trany for it everything was the same except it didnt have a speed sensor.so i split the case and put the gear from my bad trans into this trans so id have the senser.i have a problem it goes into safe mode.i took it to auto zone they put there tool on it and it said i had a problem with the solinoids 123.my question is do i have to put all the sensers and solinoids from my old trans into this one?/ the guy from auto zone says i need the tcm from the car i got the trans out of but that wouldnt do me no good if it didnt have a speed senser right?he also said i might have to have the computor erased and reprogramed and could cost $800.00 dollars thats crazy what else can i do it all should be the same if i change all the senser from the old to this one right? thanks g P>S> thanks KHLow so what will i have to do to fix this problem?? thanks

I understand your problem and you have transferred the speed sensor. Are the meter gears of both trans the same ratio?

You need to find out if the gear ratios for both trans are the same if you want to interchange the sensors and solenoids.

If the gear ratios are different, interchanging would not help, you need to reprogram the TCM
Using the TCM that works on the new trans wuld cause another problem, the TCM is incorporated in the ECM so it migh cause engine problems.

hi KHLow thanksagain for replying as far as the gear ratio im not sure if they are the same i changed all the sensors out and when i reset the comp the service engine light goes off it shifts from first to second fine then third it like holds back like it wants to go into reverse and then a big thud and light comes on stays in third until i turn ign off and back on again. i think it all has to be reprogramed like you said.wil i have to take it to the dealer?? is that the only one who can do that? also the guy at auto zone told me it would be like $800.00 dollars thats crazy just to plug a tool in and change the soft ware thats like cornering the trans market thats not right or fair. or is it??? thanks s c

Hi sincityman,

The programming computer cost tens of thaousands and are rarely used so we can't say they are crazy.

Get a scan done to find out what engine and trans error code there is and we can try to figure out what is wrong. For starters, the trans might be faulty.

At OBD II diagnostic terminal, bridge terminal 1 and 4 and get the blinking code.

Use voltmeter or LED light to bridge terminal 7 and 4 and count the blinking codes.

Note : Do not know if the above works for your model.
