My wife and I own a 2003 eclipse with the auto trans, with the manual clutchless shift option. She had let it run low on fluid, and initially felt a jerking while backing up. Her father checked it and topped it off. The issue seemed to go away for a while.

The problem re-appeared while she was at a stop a short while later where the car seemed to jerk, or grab and let go. There are no obvious signs of a leak, I am thinking she may have burned out the trans.

If this is the case, then what can I do to have it repaired, and if a re-build is the only option, how much would an honest estimate run me to have that kind of work done. Thanks so much...

Hi Sgt Engelhardt,

Check the condition of the fluid and level again. If the fluid is low, there might be a leaking somewhere or the amount used to top up was insufficient. If it is very dark, then possibility of burning is higher.

Normally when clutches are burnt, it would slip and not catch and a rebuilt would be necessary.

It could be a relay or solenoid issues so you need a scan to find out if it is an electrical problem that is causing the jerking.

Prices for rebuilts would depend on the amount of damages and sorry I am unable to assist in providing the costing.

Ok, she got it off black tag after it sitting for 60 days and now all the sudden no issues. I am having her add lucas to the fluid until I can get back there to look myself.

The plan is to have her drive it for 2 days to work it into the system, and then let it sit for the 2 weeks until I get home, and then I will be able to see where we stand.

With it being all fine now, does that point at any list of posibbilities for faults ?

Hi Sgt Engelhardt,

If the car has been sitting for so long, it is possible a running in would solve the problem.

However should any problem occurs like lack of power, or erractic shifting while driving, turn off engine and restart to alow the PCM to reset, at least temporaroly, this would prevent burning of the clutches if the trans reverts to limp mode.
