2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse dies when i take foot off the accel

I have to step on the gas to get the engine started and when I take my foot off the pedal the rpm gauge falls drastically til it dies. what could be causing this problem?

Throttle cable needs adjusting.

There is a bracket with 2 bolts by the plenum.. Losen them and adjust so that there is nearly no freeplay when the throttle is fully closed.

is the accelerator cable the same thing as the throttle cable? can't find anything in my book on plenum or throttle cable.. haynes manual
