Sound of exhaust changed one day from throaty to more of a chainsaw type sound. CEL light came on. Car seemed to have less power. Mitsu dealer checked, put new plugs, wires, rotor etc. on, reflashed computer, didn't seem to think exhaust sound was issue. 2 days later CEL came on again. Took car back to dealer. Ran compression test. said left bank was a little low but not bad. Flashed computer again. Said car was OK to drive. 1 day later CEL on again. I took car to local mechanic. He found an issue with Map to PCM wiring. Fixed it. Exhaust went back to sounding normal. Car drove 2 weeks before exhaust sound changed to chain saw again and CEL came on again. Do I need to rebuid the engine, or just swap out the engine and computer? Could there be an issue with the Catayltic converter ( dealer said CAT was OK - but I can't figure out why the change in exhaust sound)

If it th ecat, try loosening th eexhaust pipes befor the cat to let exhaust out, if that is th eproblem it wil run ok, loud bu tok. Exactly what codes were in thePCM? need to see if it is a recurring code,if they found bad wiring i\and it fixed it for a while, it could be related

random cylinder misfire code.Do you notice the engine missing? If tuned up and it is throwing that code , you ma have a bad/weak injector

It was tuned up and I haven't really noticed the car missing. The dealer couldn't solve it. Hadn't thought about the injectors though. Still wonder why the exhaust sound woukld change. Everything seemed to happen at the same time I noticed the exhaust sound change,. Wonder if this is some rare problem I could spend a life time trying to fix - and should find a working used low mileage engine and drop it in and be done with it. The car is great otherwise

Thats a pretty extreme fix. If it had random misfires, then that can cause the engine to sound different.Use a meter to measure the ohms across the injectors when they are warm to see if any one is different
