I recently posted a question about a broken timing belt and whether there woiuld be engine damage if just the pulley broke and not the belt itself. I took the car to Mitsubishi dealer where the timing belt, both pullleys, and gaskets were changed as preventative maintenance at 64000 miles. 5 days ago, the bolt that holds the pulley bracket broke (flush with the engine hole), the pulleyflew off, and then the belt came off (not broken, just off). Now mitsubishi is telling me that they did not remove the bracket when they replaced the pulley so it isn't their responsibility to fix. Is it true that a timing belt, both pulleys, and all the other labor intensive work can be done without loosening or removing the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley to the bracket?

Hi
The tensioner pulley bolt that holds auto adjuster to the block does not need to be removed. You loosen the bolt on pulley and rotate away. Also the idler pulley is not remove either. The repair was done 25K miles ago?
I would not hold them at fault.

This guide will help you do the timing belt replacement look toward the bottom of the page

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Anyway, such bolts should not break and it could have been a manufacturing defect, you can argue about it.

I just had the valves replaced and now thhe timing mark on the back head will not line up. It wont to roll like the lobes of the cam aren't enabling it to stay there. What is the problem?

Not all cam would stay in the lined up position. You need to turn and hold the cam while installing the timing belt.

On June 5,08, I had the radiator on my car replaced(new). On June 17, I'm driving at about 70 mph on the interstate when all of a sudden my car starts to slow down on its own. I start pulling over and check to make sure the car hasn't overheated. It hasn't. I attempt to crank it after about 5 minutes and the car would crank, stay on for about 15 seconds, I could feel it shake lightly and then shut off. My car is at 151,000 and I purchased it at 70,000. I am unsure if the timing belt was already replaced when I purchased the car.

Hi foxxylelee,

If the cranking is faster than normal, as if there is very little resistance, you could have a snapped timing belt.

Other than that, you need to check if the problem is electricals or fuel.

My car timing belt snapped and the mechanic suggested I get a new motor for it because fixing the belt will cost me more. Is that true?

if your belt snapped then it bent all your intake valves so it is up to you whether to put a few thousand dollars into a 18 yr old car. either for a new engine or cylinder head repair. get a quote first.

side opposite tensione make belt tight from crank to cam use wrench to slightly move cam to tighten belt to indicator. Use a BIG pincer type paperclip to hold belt netx do other cam same wat wrench to get into teeth don't freak over a hafl tooth off. then clamp it now holding slack side tight position tensioner

If your asking honestly I wouldnt do it yourself.
It has a interferce engine, if your new timing belt misses your gonna bend your valves and pistons and your engine will be junk. Save up your money for a certified mechanic to do it. Instructions dont always help for interference engines. If you screw up once its done!
just trying to save you from complete engine sacrifice.

you need to replace the water pump with the timing belt. Saves labor because its in the same general area. If he didnt replace it then do it now.
I am sure your timing belt is fine. Make sure it is replaced every 60k- 70k miles or your gonna be junking the engine. If it doesnt get replaced at this time pistons shred and valves bend. If its time to change again do it, If you didnt replace the water pump then it may be time.

If the old belt let go while the engine was running, then there is a very good chance that you have bent valves because this is an interference engine.

Noises problem
1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse Manual 100,00 miles

There is a loud rattling that,it just started, and is coming from where the timing belt is encased... the belt still feels tight it doesn't give at all ...Is this the timing belt? If not what else would make that rattle....

First --I'd stop driving it until I checked it out. There are other stuff there though (alternator. compressor.. )

But if you have determined that it is coming from the timing belt area -- there are pulleys in theire that help tension and align the belt. They spin at very high RPMS and I'm told thay typically wear out at 100K or so. When they do, they let the belt get crooked and then it starts wearing and tearing.

And you know what happens when the timing belt tears up.

A 1995 with only 100k -- sweet, those were great cars. Be sure and check your oil.

Had car for 15 years , with only minor problems. Now it is wound up and feels like its engine is going to blow up. I have to up shift at much lower speed and at 60mp hr shift into 5th gear, however once in 5th seems to run better. Also when car is idling its at 1rpm is this normal? Its loud and has somewhat of a shake. The mechanic that did job says has nothing to do with his work, but it was running fine before he changed timing belt? Unfortunately am disabled and my funds are very limited or I would love to donate :(

My feeling is that the valve timing is out, often this is the case if great care is not taken to check after replacing the belt, this should be checked first.

I recently had my timing belt change less than 15000 miles ago but it broke anyway, I was wondering if I bent the valves? is there clearence?, I was driving at about 50 miles an hour when it broke and I did try starting the car several times before I realized it was the belt, the car did run great before this problem, should I try changing the belt?

Hi there,

according to my information your engine is an interference type engine and valve damage had more than likely taken place, to prove this, replace the belt and don a compression test.

is there an easy way to tell if the timing belt is broken or if the ecm has failed ...my 90 eclipse is not running stopped suddenly while the engine was idle. people have told me it is either the timing belt or the ecm i am tring to sell this car but i would get more for it if it is running trying to decide if it is worth the investment or a couple hundred bucks or just sell it as is? thanks for any advice offered! jason.

Hi jason,

If the engine seems to turn faster than normal when trying to start, it most likely to be a broken timing belt.

Remove the oil filler cap and get someone to crank the engine. If the camshaft move while being cranked, the timing belt is working.
