i recently replaced the fuel pump for this car, and after i replaced all the hoses and dropped it back down off the ramps. i tried to start it and it wouldnt start. i would turn over but not start. i ordered the fuel pump off ebay, if was for a ford contuor but said it was compatible with a 94 eclipse. when i was replacing it the wires didnt match so i redid them myself but i dont know if i put the wires back the way they were supposed to be. is there any way to know whats wrong without opening it back up?

can you hear the fuel pump prime up when you first turn the ignition key to ON, without cranking? if not then it is not wired up properly. if the fuel pump is working then the fuel system may need primed, turn key on, no crank, back off several times then try cranking engine.

it might have when i first reconnected everything, does it do that every time i turn the key?

yep it should prime up everytime key is turned OFF then back to ON.

would switchin the + - wires off the fuel pump solve it? or should i get a whole different pump?

i wouldn't be surprised if it is the wrong pump, if the wiring was not the same then that is a dead give away. the ford contour pump will fit mustangs, tempos and even a few mazdas, but i don't believe it will work for mitsubishi..

i wouldn't trust ebay but that's just me. you could double check to make sure there is power getting to the pump..the negative should be black wire on both , that will not change.

the wires are black and black with a white stripe, but i didnt check to see which one is +. is there a way to see if the pump will work?

just use loose wiring, take a loose piece of new wire and ground it to the frame near the pump and attach other end to pump wire. then use another wire and run it from the battery to the pump. this will hardwire the pump and it should run. if it does run, remove the wiring immediately, do not let it run for more than a few seconds.

battery wire goes to + and - goes to ground? and what happens if it does work?

yes , if it works that way then you know pump is good and it is just something with your vehicle's wiring that is not letting it work properly.

are you certain the last fuel pump was even bad? perhaps there was an issue preventing the original pump from getting power as well..?

the person i bought the car from said it was the fuel pump. and before i started replacing it. i started the car up and it ran for about 4 seconds and died. i assumed that the pump was bad and the car was just running off the fuel in the lines.

the pump works if i directly connect it to the battery but when i put it to the wiring in the gas tank, it doesnt work one way and if i switch the wiring it only kicks on when i turn the car off.

definitely something at fault in the wiring harness for the pump, may just want to buy new wiring harness or inspect the wiring very well .

it is the group of wires that powers the fuel pump and you could get one from a local junk yard for around $20 bucks

if i wanted to inspect the wires myself. what would i look for and where would i look? is there any test that i can do to check ?
