2000 Mitsubishi Diamante Car will not go into gear, can sta

I was driving my mitsubishi diamante 2000, all of the sudden, while pushing on the gas pedal, the engine just revs and the car seems to be in neutral. I pull over and the stop. I can start the car, put the car in the drive position, but the transmission does nothing.
