I notice a metal rubbing or grinding noise whenever I drive over pretty uneven terrain 5-6 inches up or down from the surface I'm driving on. It seems to happen when one tire goes up or down onto the uneven terrain first/by itself. The metal rubbing/grinding sound only happens once as I go over the new terrain. It lasts just a second then goes away as the other tire hits the new terrain and levels out. The noise seems to be coming from the drivers side front wheel area.

Good afternoon,

Sounds like this could be a strut or upper strut mount. You need to have someone check the struts as they are common for this noise.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried to bounce the car up and down by pushing down with my foot by the door jamb. It moves the car up and down pretty well but doesn't make that same sound. Should it be making the same noise if it were the strut or strut mount? Also, that noise only happens at slow speeds (0-10 mph)...or at least I've never noticed at a faster speeds.

Checking it when bouncing it is not the test. When you are driving, it puts it under a load.

You need to have someone drive it and hear the noise and check for the source of the noise.
