Is there a TCM/PCM in a 1999 Mercury Villager Estate? If so can it cause problems such as no reverse? I have this vehicle and had no issues till I changed the tranny oil. Because a nut would not come off the filter I did not change it. No burn, no metal frags were found in pan. After I changed the fluid I tested the car in forward and reverse and then rechecked and leveled the fluids. I let this van sit for three days and when came back to it I had two problems, no reverse and an electrical drain. I did read how you test for shorts and will try that.

Drives well in forward barely moves in first and will not move in reverse.

How many miles since fluid was changed?
What fluid did you refill it with?
Solve the parasitic draw issue first.

The fluid was changed a 84,500 and I purchased the vehicle at 82636. I have no record of the maintenance from the vehicle was tested prior to purchase.

I purchased the oil at Autozone and they said to use MA5 Mercon . i later checked this at a local Nissan dealer and the mechanic said that the oil was fien to use.

I will find the drain and fill you n later.

If after you solve the short, the tranny issue isn't resolved, have a pressure test on the tranny done. Reverse needs twice the pressure that drive gears do! May need a new pump.
