Engine Performance problem
1998 Mercury Villager Two Wheel Drive Automatic 170,00 miles
I was driving along at about 50 mph when I noticed a loss of power for a few seconds. Then after a bit the engine began to stutter, as if running out of gas but I had just filled it (it was very empty). I wondered if there were water in the line. But the stutter was very regular and only changed wihen I shifted to a lower gear to make it up a hill. Nursed it along at low speeds, and then suddenly it was fine for about a mile, until it started again. At certain points the van was shaking fairly violently. On a downhill stretch I sliipped it into neutral. The violent shaking stopped but the motor continued to stutter. Just before I reached my neighborhood it resolved itself and I drove home as if nothing happened. In the garage I restarted it. It started no problem.
