1997 mercury tracer slightly jerks going into first gear

i just bought a 1997 mercury tracer auto, it has 144,000 miles on it , i dont know the engine size but it is a very small car, i noticed that it slightly jerks when i go into first gear this is the only time it does it and there is a slight vibrating feeling when i accelerate , does this sound like a transmission problem?
