Engine Performance problem

I own a 1993 Mercury Tracer, I believe it is a 4 cylinder although I am not entirely sure. I feel as if I have replaced the darn engine a few times and everytime i go to fix it they tell me the same thing, charge me for the same product/services and the problem still is not resolved.
Anyhow, I have replaced the fuel pupm twice, the fuel filter, the oxygen sensor, the battery, and the mass air flow and I am now being told that we need to replace it yet again. I really dont want to shell aout that much cash if I do not need to.
I am not able to drive my car on the highways or the interstates at the moment for fear that I will end up stranded somewhere because it feels as if it will die. We have hooked up the thing that reads all of the codes and is supposed to tell them what is wrong. Nothing is ever brought up. Also we have reset all of them and the darn check engine light still pops up. They have also tried looking for the EGR valve and for some reason are not able to locate it. When I start to drive and it gets about 40 now( it was 60-73) it sputters, jerks, and the MPH automatically drops and I have to floor the accelerator all the way through the floor and that still does not keep it going at the speed. this is turn causes my RMP's to rev like crazy.
I have no idea what is wrong with it. I feel like I should take it out in a field and fill it full of lead, except for the fact tat I really need the darn thing it is my only mode of transportation. Are there any suggestions that you have for what may possibly be the problem? I am open to all sugestions.

Get the computer rescanned for code/s and comeback with it, this is where we start-Autozone provides this free service.
