1989 Mercury Station Wagon in out pull on axle stubs

i can pull the wheel in out about half inch on rear axle both sides no other movement not up down or side to side but just a in out movement either by pulling wheel out or ppushing in whats the problem its a ford tract loc 8.8 3.55 gears as from factory thank you
