humming noise

i just bought a 1995 mercury sable gs, with the 3.0
v-6. while the car is running there is a humming noise from the rear of the car. i think it is the fuel pump,but if it is does that mean i need to have it replaced.

Sounds like a fuel pump. Generally, it is a sign that the pump is on it's way out. Having said that I have seen some go for a few years like that.
