My mechanic says my car needs front brakes and exhaust. Estimate $1,000 He says the exhausts are expensive on that car. Is this about right?

Which parts he`s going to replace?
catalytic converter and the whole exhaust?
The brakes are not that expensive (even y you have to cut or replace the discs)
What its the problem with the exhaust?

I thought my muffler might have a leak because starting to hear noise.
I went in and asked if they could check the muffler.
They called me and told me the car needed front brakes and exhaust. Not surprised about brakes, they had been squealing. I don't know what is wrong with the exhaust but it must be the entire exhaust considering the estimate and the fact that I had rear brakes and an emergency brake cable done there 4 years ago and it was only $278. They are also an inspection station. Does anyone have any opinions about going to Midas? Thanks
