This sounds like you have low fuel pressure but to be sure these guides will help us fix it

here are two guides to help us fix the problem.

Ive been fighting a check engine light for 4 months now. Its the same code over and over. The code is P0301, which is a cylinder 1 misfire detected. Ive replaced the plugs, wires, fuel injector, fuel filter, intake gaskets (upper and lower), cleaned the egr, replaced the IAC valve, and ran cleaner through. Ive checked compression in the cylinder and its good. Vehicle runs smooth as silk when its warm and the a/c is off. But if u turn the a/c on its misses at idle or in gear at idle. It drives smooth. It seems to only miss under a load. Ive checked fuel pressure and it seems to be good. Id appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you.

ford has run dianostics on car and found nothing to be wrong. but the check engine light remains on and still misses under the load of the a/c. i was thinking possible fuel pressure issue but seems to me that it would do it all the time. so u think the cam sensor and crank sensor are out of sync. should i replace them or have them tested? Im all out of ideas myself.

Yes low fuel pressure can cause miss needs to be 35-65 psi. Having computer flashed will reset all peramiters to factory spec.

Then I got into town and slowed to around 30mph then the car started to jerk badly.....but goes away when I speed up.....On sunday I have to make the same trip to take my daughter back home.....WIll it be ok to drive?

You said the engine light came on? So check with you local parts stores and see if one will do a free scan. Get the code and then clear the codes. Get back to me with the code and we will see what the car tells us about what is happening.

Well I took it in this morning at a full limp, and got it back at a partial limp. Plug wires now replaced evaporation leak found(under the car where it bottomed out and smashed some kind of valve that regulates gas fumes when you fill up?That was the evap code,I guess). Now my baby is misfiring on cylinders#1 and #5, code P0301. I am supposed to bring it back next week to have the coil pack replaced at $400.00, and he says that "might" fix the problem. I am wodering if this misfire suddenly occurred because I was driving it with the check engine light on for so long(back when it was only an evap code a few days ago)I just can't afford the 'hit and miss' style this is starting to look like. Please help! Merlin2021, thank you for trying!

P0301 is a misffire on cyl #1...So the smashed parts underneath have been fixed? Along with the wires, did they check or replace the plugs? They may have fouled during limp mode operation!

Well, it's come down to this: I feel like I'm being taken, but I'm going in anyway at 10:00. Maybe he really will fix it completely, especially after I have given him this much money(after today, the total will be 500$)....I really have no back up plan, and I am discovering that it's impossible to take care of my kids' needs without a vehicle. I just want to believe that the mechanic will do the right thing and that he will know what he's doing. I have to do something. I tried to get him to look at my conversations with you, and he said no.

Hello,

Here is an easy test for checking if a cat is going bad.
Remove the O2 sensor(s) in front of the cat. Take for test drive if runs fine then cat is going bad and you will need to replace it.

Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

where is cylinder #1 and how do i set at top dead center? a mechanic had told me to remove the plug and stick a screwdriver im there and see if the piston is up,if not remove screwdriver and turn key to rotate and check again.is this logical or is there an easier or better way to do this?

Hi there,

Remove all the spark plugs, and earth the coil lead, with a helper, place you finger over No 1 plug hole (front plug) get your helper to crank the engine , just a key on and off type crank, just enough to turn the engine a little, do this until you feel pressure building up on your finger, this will be the piston starting to compress the air in the cylinder, now with the key off, turn the engine by hand, ( this should be easy with no plugs) till the timing mark on the pulley reaches "0" on the timing scale, this will be TDC No 1.

I have a check engine light flashing. I had it checked and it came up misfiring in cylinders 2, 5, and 6. I changed out the plugs and the plug wires.(changed the wires one at a time). The light is still flashing and had it checked and still comes up the same. Is there some way to check why it is doing it without bringing the car into a shop...strapped for cash at the moment. Thanks for any help By the way the car has 155,000 miles on it

By the way, the diagnostic also said that the ignition coil was faulty. Will that make cylanders 2, 5, and 6 missfire? Sorry, don't know much about cars. Thanks for any help

I can usually go to a local parts store and have them hook up the computer to check the engine light code. They can even reset it to see if it goes away. Autozone does this at no charge.

Hi my name's Justin, i was sitting at the store the other day with my vehicle in park, so i started reving up the egine to about 3500-4000 rpms, it ran smoothly to about 3000 rpms but after that it started skipping or chugging. and i've noticed it would do that when at a higher rate of speed as well. I also had another question, when my car is idling the rpms will see saw between 500 rpms and 1000 rpms, but in that time the lights will get brighter when i mash the throttle and they get dimmer when i let off of the throttle, any answer would be most appreciated. If no load on engine you should not be raising the RPM that high as you may cause an internal engine failure
and to prevent that from happening the PCM will shut off injectors to limit the RPM
Reason for it cutting out

Defective injector or burned valve. A cylinder leakage test can identify if a valve is not sealing.

Are you saying three different cylinders are misfiring? If so, look for something they have in common. Low fuel pressure is one thing. If you have the dual overhead camshafts, check for a jumped timing belt.

Injectors should be replaced in matched sets so they flow the same amount of fuel. If only one or two are replaced, some cylinders will always run a little lean. The oxygen sensors will detect the unburned oxygen in the exhaust and the Engine Computer will command more fuel from all of the injectors.

If there's a leak in the fresh air tube between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body, some unmeasured air will get in and there won't be any fuel to go with it. That can result in a lean mixture misfire.

The next thing would be to connect a scanner that displays live sensor data so you can see what the Engine Computer is seeing. That will provide some insight as to whether the computer is commanding the wrong amount of fuel based on an incorrect sensor value, or whether the engine is misfiring in spite of correct sensor values. It takes an experienced mechanic to interpret the sensor readings.

When i crank the car the engine sounds like its skipping. All plugs, wires, rotary cap etc have been checked. It has a NEW gas filter. I have to pump the pedal at the right time{constantly} to keep it running. The scanner will not read any codes from it. What is wrong with it?

the first thing you should check in a situation like this is your spark plugs, those can tell you a whole lot about what's going on in the engine.

your story does remind me of one i read on the main page, though. the pros said to that case that it was probably a faulty fuel pump, yours may be related, but still, start simple, with the plugs.
