2000 Mercury Sable warning light

I'm not sure what you are seeing there. The only thing close to looking like a gear is actually a tire and it's the low tire pressure warning. See if you can identify which one from this. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes

It is a yellow/orange circle, with teeth on the outside of the circle, and a ! (explamation) point in it.
it is just to the left of the ABS light.

That has nothing to do with brakes. That is a "Check transmission" light. It indicates that the Transmission Control Module has monitored a malfunction and stored a trouble code to identify it. You will need a professional scan tool to be able to read the code which will get you pointed in the right direction. I recommend a transmission shop.

I'm sorry. Things just don't work that way. You need to get the codes retrieved and they will give you a direction. There are literally hundreds of reasons that light can come on.

I went to Advance Auto

If the check engine light is not showing, then the transmission code cannot be read.

Talked to an another mechanic, and was told the same thing.
I told him what I did, and he was surprised that you could not give more info.

Plain and simple, if the check engine light is not on, then cannot read transmission code.

Doesn't Mercury/you have an answer?

There has to be someway that there is a list of the codes.
Does that mean that there is nothing that can be done/

I'm afraid your just talking to people that have no clue what they are talking about. The people at AutoZone are part time clerks with no technical training at all.

First off, we are not even talking about a check engine light although I assure you that codes are stored in memory and can be read at any time if no one has erased them. Here we are Talking about the Transmission Control Module that stores it's own codes independently and the equipment Autozone uses won't even begin to handle this problem. This requires professional equipment that costs $10,000 and up, not the $100 code reader that Autozone is using.

You seem to think this is just a simple fix that anyone can tell you over the Internet. Well, it's not.

I'm giving you the list of MOST of the possible codes related to transmission performance. Now, bear in mind that every single one of these code numbers has a corresponding "flow chart" diagnostic procedure to determine the cause and some of these tests can be 10 pages long.

Although I probably don't know of ANYONE who could figure them out, it gives me comfort knowing there are actually a bunch of codes.
It took way too long to get them from you.

The codes mean nothing to me, but there is comfort seeing them.
