Transmission problem
2000 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My Sable code, PO741 comes on after driving about 5-8 miles.

When it does, the rpms go up about 200-400.

I had asked earlier, but gave you said I gave you generic info, I now had a mechanic do it as a favor.

The code has something to do with the tourque convertor, ?

You gave me a list of what some issues might be related with it, but Advance said the check engine light had to be on before they could read it, you said that they are dumber than I am, which doesn't take much, as you know.

You could tell by my questions, I was frustrated, but you really tried.

I am scared to death, as I am retired, and on a small pension.

You probably hear that a lot.

Thank you

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

This will probably be the TTC shift solenoid, it is a fairly common problem, most mechanics will be able to look at this for you, but i would suggest that you talk to your local transmission specialist about this first and get their first hand opinion after a road test and diagnosis.

Thanks as always.

What is the TTC, and what does it do, and what kind of damage will it cause?
Why a road test, what could they find that the code does not already tell them?

The TTC is the torque converter lock up clutch solenoid. This locks the torque converter up when the transmission is in top gear it allows a better power flow through the converter so there is less drag and allows a marginal power & economy improvement, with it off there is no damage being done, a road test will be able to pick up any odd noises and also check the smoothness of changes up and down the range.

So what I think you are saying it is "OK?" to drive the car, because basacially what will happen does cause the car to blow up.
It is still diverably. I have to waait till next mont for my new check to arrive.

I feel that the car is ok to drive, but that is why i did suggest that a mechanic test drive it as well, as i can't tell you of any other possible issues associated with this problem that a test drive will show, but as far at the TTC code, it will be ok to drive.

ALLRIGHT!!!

My friend's mechanic said the same thing, and is ordering one.

I know you know this, but FYI, you are very correct.

The car drives fine, the only thing that happens is that the rpm's jump up about 200.

Put a business card over the light, now it doesen't blink. :)

Again great job, much appreciated.
Tell your buddies thanks.

Some of my previous questions, I had minor issuies with, but this absolutly makes up for them.
