1997 Mercury Sable Poor gas mileage on my 97 Mercury Sable

I just purchased a 1997 Mercury Sable with a 3.0 Liter engine & 175,000 km. (100,000 miles approx.).

It idles fine & starts up easily, problem is that it seems to get around only 11 mpg. ??

Any help?

The prime suspects here are the mass air flow sensor and the O2 sensor(s). Is the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light on? Have you had it checked for trouble codes?
